Importance of Humility
This incident happened one or two months before when I went for a grocery run in a hypermarket. During that time I came across the spice section but I noticed something different with the veg and non-veg spice label.
I got confused enough to call the staff. I showed him 2 different powders, a veg stew, and the other ginger chicken, and told him that this was wrongly labeled and that they needed to inform the company. He looked at the product and said he was really sorry that it was a mistake from the company side and that he will inform them.
A month later I went there and came across the same spice section and saw that those products were still labelled as green. I called in the manager and told him that I had given a warning last month and that he needed to understand that this label was misleading to a lot of consumers. There is also a possibility that any consumer could buy the product and once they understand that they have been misled they might even file a case against them.
The manager immediately called the 7 staff’s in charge of that section and gave them a dressing down about why nobody bothered to follow it up.
That night I was talking to a friend of mine and I was narrating the whole incident to him. At one point he stopped me and said, “are you not aware that all those non-veg spices are vegetarian”.
I was like wait what…..
I was being schooled on a basic thing that I had no clue about, I was embarrassed that I didn't know about it and at the same time humiliated that I made a big fuss about this at the store. I couldn't stand myself so I did the only thing that I could do. Go over and apologize.
I went to the store the next day and called the manager again. I apologized to him and said that I was really sorry and that it was a mistake.
He asked me how it was possible. I took the product and showed him the list of ingredients and that there were no non-veg ingredients in it.
I was ready to apologize personally to the other 7 staff. He replied that it was okay and that they learned something new too. He said he would handle it and we parted ways.
This brings back us to the topic at hand: the importance of humility
1. Admitting oneself when you are wrong and taking criticism shows an opportunity for growth.
2. You understand that you have the self-confidence and self-awareness to recognize the value of others without feeling threatened. It requires the containment of one's ego.
3. Approach learning and growth with real humility. Accept that pride affects us all and will try to limit you. Failure is part of the process. Set aside your ego and simply move past the failure. Make adjustments, and continue the process anew.
